CHAPTER TEN

ENZO

Luigi shoves a gun into my hand. Beside me, Matteo looks terrified. Marco is grinning while Papa steps up beside me. His eyes are darker than I’ve ever seen them. I want to look away, but I can’t. The gun in my hand feels like a weight pulling me down.

“Do it,” Papa says.

“I can’t.” One tear slides down my cheek.

“You’re ten-years-old now, Lorenzo,” Papa says. “It’s time to be a man.”

“I can’t!”

Matteo takes a nervous step forward. “Don’t make him, Papa. He’s not ready.”

“Shut up!” Papa roars before striking Matteo across the face.

“Papa please,” Marco says from the ground. “He doesn’t have to do it. I’ll do it. I promise, I’ll do it myself.”

“Lorenzo is no longer a baby! We’re done coddling him!”

Luigi squares his shoulders, unaffected by the scene unfolding in front of him. I look to him for help. He is my eldest brother. Our father’s right hand. Surely, if anyone can save me from this, it’s him.

He doesn’t as much as meet my gaze. My seventeen-year-old brother is more cowardly than Matteo, still begging our father to leave me alone. Matteo is only two years older than I am, but he has always been my fiercest protector.

Matteo is lying sobbing on the ground and holding his cheek. He knows he’s failed to protect me this time. Beside him, Marco’s grin is wider than I’ve ever seen it. At only thirteen years old, he’s already the darkest of us all.

“Do it,” Papa orders. His voice is calm now. Low. Deadly.

Papa stands behind me, hovering over my shoulder like the devil he is. Terrified, I raise my hand and point the gun at the bleeding man on the ground.

“What did he do?” I ask.

“It doesn’t matter,” Luigi says. “He’s an enemy of our family. That is all you need to know.”

“I can’t kill someone without a reason,” I cry. What they’re asking of me is impossible.

Papa puts a steadying hand on my shoulder. For a split second, I think he’s offering me comfort. Then his hand tightens. I flinch in pain, but Papa doesn’t release his grip until I cry out. When he lets go of me, I swear I can feel him smiling.

“I don’t want to hurt you,” Papa says, his voice a direct contrast to the situation. He sounds almost soothing. “I never want to hurt my children, but it’s my job as their father to prepare them for the world. And this is our world, Lorenzo.”

“Why?” I whimper.

“Don’t ask questions,” Luigi snaps. I jerk my head up at the sound of his voice. For the first time since my brothers brought me to this place beside the bridge, Luigi looks me in the eye. His gaze is not angry. It is not harsh. If anything, it’s a warning.

Don’t make this harder, he seems to be saying. Just do what Papa says, so we can all get out of here in one piece.

“It’s alright, Luigi,” Papa says. “Your brother needs to learn.”

Stepping around me, Papa reaches for the man in front of me.
